The Applied Apparel Research Team in the NXT Sport Research Lab is seeking a Principal Researcher physiology with expertise in disciplines relevant for apparel innovation - in thermoregulation, exercise recovery, sensory neurophysiology, integrative physiology, ergonomics, kinesiology, exercise science, or human performance. The team's mission is to drive apparel innovation through knowledge and insights gained from a scientific understanding of athletes and their environment. The team's research primarily focuses on athletic and lifestyle apparel created for use in challenging environments (hot, windy, cold, polluted) and for promoting recovery following strenuous exercise.

Outstanding job performance will be characterized by:

Creating the future. This position requires the ability to recognize areas of opportunity for the development of knowledge with applicability to future apparel innovation strategy, and to develop innovative research programs that drive the needs of the business.

• Delivering results. Establish and sustain a business-aligned research agenda, delivering against product development needs throughout the innovation pipeline. This position requires the ability to manage multiple programs of research while ensuring that 1) all milestones and deliverables are met in a timely fashion; and 2) all deliverables are of the highest scientific integrity.

• Effective high-profile communication. Whether in front of a panel of scientists, the CEO of Nike, a world-class athlete, a room full of media relations representatives, or a courtroom of jurors, the position requires someone who can communicate their knowledge and insights in high-profile situations to diverse audiences.

• Continuously growing and developing. This position requires continuous growth and development (e.g., exploring new scientific areas, utilizing novel approaches, learning new scientific techniques), as well as creating a team environment that promotes teaching & learning to ensure the team meets the challenges of an ever-changing marketplace.

• Special expertise. This position requires translating scientific expertise in thermoregulation, recovery, smart apparel, exercise science, and perception into knowledge & insights that drive innovations in apparel. This position requires development of and accountability for all aspects of the team's applied research agenda, from expert opinions / claims analysis, to ethical considerations of study design, defensibility of scientific approach, interpretation of findings and translation into product development direction.

O utstanding candidates will be characterized by:

Education:

  • PhD. in discipline relevant for apparel innovation (thermoregulation, exercise recovery, sensory neurophysiology, integrative physiology, ergonomics, kinesiology, exercise science, human performance). Non PhD's considered with relevant experience
Experience:
  • Previous experience turning knowledge and insights into business outcomes (e.g., tangible products, new areas of opportunity).
  • Previous experience managing multiple projects with multiple stakeholders (e.g., establishing & tracking milestones & deliverables, communicating with stakeholders, ensuring prototypes are developed).
  • Previous experience creating "defensible" research programs (scientifically, ethically, and legally defensible).
  • Previous experience creating research programs that are aligned with a broader strategy.
  • A track record of continuous growth and development (novel scientific approaches and techniques), as well as previous experience developing junior scientists to reach their full potential.
  • Previous experience with high-profile communication to diverse audiences.
  • Minimum 3 years relevant work experience after graduate education, typically in research, sport/exercise science, engineering, and/or ergonomics. +7 years in lieu of PhD
  • Consistent record of delivering scientific insights that influence products, services, and lead to new business opportunities.
