WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR?

Nike’s global sustainability team is continually evolving to meet new challenges today and on the horizon. We are looking for an experienced attorney to join our Legal team as Assistant General Counsel, Environmental, Social, and Governance Compliance and provide legal support for the sustainability team’s work on mandatory and voluntary reporting, disclosure strategy, and strategic environmental and social initiatives. This role will participate as a member of a cross-functional team focused on aligning efforts to meet regulatory and reporting compliance, disclosure best practices, a strategic approach to transparency and advising on risk in an evolving regulatory landscape.

WHAT WILL YOU WORK ON?

As Assistant General Counsel – Environmental, Social, and Governance Compliance, you will provide legal support for the digital transformation of Nike’s Strategic Enterprise Capabilities, global manufacturing and logistics teams.  This includes:

  • Providing advice and support on regulatory matters related to environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues, with particular focus on environmental compliance and voluntary standards for the company's operations, value chain, and product portfolio

  • Supporting strategy development, risk analysis and change management, focused on integrating global regulatory compliance and reporting priorities into a cohesive sustainability strategy

  • Collaborating with global cross-functional teams, including leaders from Sustainability, Controlling, Government and Public Affairs and other areas of the business to ensure global alignment

  • Monitoring and interpreting changes in the global regulatory environment, advising the company on relevant developments, recommend strategies and necessary actions

  • Identifying legal issues, providing analysis of legal risks, creating and implementing solutions structured to meet sustainability objectives flexibly and efficiently, while maximizing legal protections

  • Working cross-functionally across sustainability, corporate governance, finance, controlling, tax, customs and trade, technology and procurement teams, both domestically and internationally, to identify risks and help implement effective enterprise-wide solutions for the business

  • Selecting, retaining and managing outside legal counsel to ensure high-value, cost-effective representation

  • Supporting other department needs as necessary

WHO WILL YOU WORK WITH?

You will join the Global Supply Chain and Sustainability legal team within our Supply Chain, Trade and Compliance COE. You will work directly with the Senior Director of Sustainability Reporting, Disclosure and Compliance and provide legal support for NIKE’s mandatory and voluntary sustainability reporting and disclosure strategy, as well as other strategic sustainability initiatives within the supply chain and across the company. You will act as the principal legal advisor to that team and advise on legal requirements, balancing risk, and driving enterprise-wide sustainability efforts that align with the overall NIKE strategy.

WHAT WILL YOU BRING TO NIKE?

  • JD degree

  • Member, in good standing, of at least one US State Bar and willingness to meet the requirements of membership in the Oregon State Bar

  • Minimum 5-7 years' experience in a legal practice that includes significant exposure to international human rights and environmental standards, voluntary and mandatory disclosures and targets, NGO engagement, supply chain and technology issues

  • Law firm experience in one or more of the following specialty areas is preferred: corporate sustainability, supply chain, environmental law, international human rights law

  • Prior in-house experience with sustainability and supply chain issues is preferred

  • An ability to communicate effectively and succinctly at all levels, both verbally and in writing.
